This summer, Brisbane’s beloved Gallery of Modern Art will be celebrating its 10th birthday, and what better way to celebrate than to host an amazing range of free major exhibitions? With celebrations beginning on 3 December, featured exhibitions include Lucent and The Tim Fairfax Gift. The Sugar Spin exhibition is a summer highlight arriving in December, and is an edgy exploration of light, space, architecture and the senses.
A highlight on Brisbane’s summer events calendar, tennis fans will this year have the opportunity to see superstar Rafael Nadal compete in Brisbane for the first time. Comedy geniuses such as Stephen K Amos, Rove, Wil Anderson, Sam Simmons, Tom Gleeson, Paul Foot, Hannah Gadsby and plenty more are taking over the Brisbane Powerhouse (and spilling into Brisbane City Hall) for the 2017 festival. Rugby fans and over 300 star players will descend on Brisbane for two days of rugby heaven for the Brisbane Global Tens. Featuring 10 Australian and New Zealand Super Rugby clubs, as well as four elite teams from Toulon, South Africa, Samoa and Japan, rugby fans will be treated to a host of activities leading up to and during the event.

The Lorna Jane Queensland Firebirds are back with a bang this summer. Following the Firebirds’ back-to-back premiership win in 2016, more games will be taken to the 10,000 capacity Brisbane Entertainment Centre. Showcasing the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator, this exhibition is a celebration of a landmark experiment in human history and sure to delight adults and kids alike.
Having taken London’s West End and Broadway by storm, Matilda the Musical will make its debut on the Brisbane stage this summer. The genius duo of Dennis Kelly and Australia’s own Tim Minchin has netted this masterpiece more than 70 major international awards. This is one of your favourite childhood movies brought to life on stage with songs and laughs that you absolutely cannot miss.
