How to lower the costs of moving

5 Jan 2017 local real estate 0 Comment

Moving can be a costly exercise, but with a little planning and inside knowledge, it needn’t break the bank.

  1. Cull

It’s important not to pay moving fees for things you don’t need – it’s time to cull everything else.

Be generous; donate unwanted items to family, friends and charities.

Pay special attention to books, as they’re heavy and expensive to move. Also use up all the food in the pantry and fridge ahead of the move and dispose of out-of-date items

  1. Consider DIY options

Like anything else, doing-it-yourself might be the cheaper option when moving.

Investigate the cost of hiring a truck and do your homework.

But remember, the professionals will be faster, experienced and careful. There are ways to move furniture efficiently and willing friends can create problems by damaging valuable items.

  1. Do you have to move on a weekend?

Using a professional mover doesn’t need to be expensive. There are several ways to keep costs down.

Be clear and transparent on what needs to be moved and don’t book an hourly rate, as the timing and cost may blow out considerably.

Also, ask the moving companies about the possibility of cheaper days and times to move.

A weekend move can often prove more costly. Also, an on-site quotation is always preferable to online.

Ask friends and family for recommendations when looking for a professional mover, she adds. Or contact the Australian Furniture Removers Association, the professional body for furniture removalists for recommendations. Set a budget, get a written quotation and establish moving transit insurance.

  1. Box it up & avoid newspaper

Wrapping items in newspaper isn’t a great idea, try white butcher’s paper instead.

There’s no need to buy boxes. Collect boxes as far ahead as possible and start sorting. Only use good quality cartons with a strong base and have supplies of strong tape and white butcher’s paper for wrapping. Don’t use newspaper, as it soils items.

  1. Safeguard valuables

One of the most expensive mistakes movers make is losing valuables and vital documents in transit.

People always carry valuables and important paperwork, including information regarding the move itself, with them. Do not pack these items into the moving van.
